Yesterday while we were enjoying our pre-dinner glass of wine on the deck, a fledgling Stellar's Jay landed on one of the railing posts at the top of the stairs. Its head crest was not quite developed, and as it fluffed itself, you could see that there was still a lot of down on the body instead of mature feathers. Not too far away, I have a fuschia in a hanging basket, and the youngster hopped over to the top of the post underneath it to check it out. Snagging a blossom, it tried to fly away with it, but the branch wouldn't give, so it only got a small taste of the bloom. Don't know if fuschias are on a Stellar's Jay's regular diet - perhaps the parent birds could have told it not to bother that brightly colored plant.
